Back To School - Hello young Artists!

 

Welcome to a brand new school year! I'm so excited to see you again, whether we are virtual, or one again in person. No matter what we will have a great time and stretch our creative muscles once again. 

       

  

LESSON 9: Last Week

May 18 - 22

Last week of school and last week of art until next school year. Of course, you can always be making art during the summer time too. It is very much encouraged to stay creative.

We still have one more week together! There are two options this week.

1. Join me in person on zoom for our last draw alongs or Pictionary fun on Wednesday and Thursday at 3:00 or 5:00.

2. Complete our last art project for the year in your own time with your own supplies.

LAST ART PROJECT

Goal: Create a new and improved version of our very first art project this year.

At the beginning of the year every class made "self-portrait" hand art. This art was supposed to be about you and show your personality.

Steps:

1. Trace your hand
2. Add drawing, words, or details that show things about yourself. 
3. Add details with lines, patterns, shapes, colors, or anything else that is interesting. 
4. Outline and color if you have the supplies. 
5. The rest is up to you!

This video will go more into detail with tips on how to make your new and improved artwork more interesting.

LESSON 7: Animals in Art

May 4 - May 8 

This week all of our lessons and activities have the theme of animals in some way. Choose ONE OR MORE art activities for the week. You DO NOT have to do ALL of them. Complete the activity on your own or join us in during our art room zoom sessions this week.

ANIMALS OF NEW MEXICO

ACTIVITY: Be a wildlife photographer. Take photos of wild animals you see outside. If you find more than one animal, put the photos in a digital collage using keynote or a collage app. Knd-6th

MYTHICAL ANIMALS

ACTIVITY 1: Choose two or more animals to combine into one brand new animal. Draw on paper or create a digital photo collage using keynote. 

2nd-6th

ACTIVITY 2: Use your imagination. Create the most EPIC battle between a dragon and someone or something else. Remember to include a background, details, and color to make it a finished piece of art. 2nd-6th

LESSON 6: Virtual Art Show

April 27 - May 1

Welcome to the grand opening of the virtual art show!

LESSON 4: Paper Folding and Origami

APRIL 13-17

Welcome to paper folding week! We are going to explore the art of paper folding, also known as origami. Have you ever folded a paper airplane? Yes? Then you've done origami! Have you never made a paper airplane? WHAT?! Here, quick go make one, follow this link for some airplane options. I wonder which one flies the fastest?

Anyway, now that you've made an airplane, let's make some other stuff. 

Goal: Accomplish one or more paper folding and origami activities. 

Please turn in a photo at www.artsonia.com/class using our secret school code and project title "At Home - Paper Folding". Or hey! Turning in a video making one of these would be awesome too. 

Easiest: Abstract Paper Sculpture, Paper Fan

Medium: Emoji Face Changer, Paper Crane

Challenge: Transforming Star, Sonobe Module Cube

You might think the easy paper folding is actually challenging and maybe the challenging origami is actually pretty easy. It's all up to you and what you think you are able to accomplish. You can always search for your own origami too, like maybe a little hopping frog? Those are also fun. It's your life, choose how you want to be creative! Scroll down for options and instructions. 

Abstract Paper Sculpture

Materials: Paper strips. Tape or Glue. Base (Bottom) Can be cardboard, paper, etc. Coloring supplies if you have it. 

Instructions: Use 10 or more paper strips to create a line sculpture. Can you include a zig zag, arch, loop, spiral, and more? Fold it. Stick it. Stack it. Make it interesting. 

Paper Fan

Materials: Regular sheet of paper. Coloring supplies. Tape.

Instructions: Design and fold your piece of paper into a decorative fan.

1000 Paper Cranes

Materials: Square paper. 

Can we create 1000 paper cranes by the end of the school year? Search for your own tutorials, or follow this link for an easy to follow video. Videos will be easier than written instructions. Make as many cranes as you possibly can.

Sadako and the One Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr

Sadako is an energetic eleven year old girl who lives in Hiroshima, Japan. She becomes ill with leukemia from the effects of the atom bomb nine years earlier. There is a Japanese legend that anyone who folds 1000 paper cranes will receive any one wish. Sadako starts her journey to fold 1000 cranes in hopes that she can become healthy again.

Questions to think about:

1. If you made 1000 paper cranes, what would you wish for? 

2. Where you hang your 1000 paper cranes?

3. Do the math: If one crane takes 5 minutes to make, how many hours would it take to make 1000 cranes?

Transforming Star

Materials: 8 paper squares

Some people call this a ninja star, but I like to think of it as a color wheel star. This is an extra fun activity and it can honestly take the place of a fidget spinner any day. 

Sonobe Modular Cube

Materials: 6 paper squares

This is another puzzle type of origami. Forget rubick's cubes, make your own sonobe cube!

LESSON 3: Color

Color Wheel

April 6-10

This week's theme is COLOR. There are three lessons to choose from with two activities in each lesson. You only need to CHOOSE ONE ACTIVITY from ONE LESSON. Of course you can always do more if you want.

Turn in a photo of your artwork on Artsonia under the project "At Home - Color"

1. RAINBOW COLOR ORDER

Activity 1: Scavenger hunt. Put objects in a rainbow colored order or in a color wheel order.

(Many students have already completed this)

Activity 2: Create artwork based on the rainbow color order. Choose your subject and supplies. Somewhere in your art there needs to be the ROYGBIV color order.

2. MIXING COLORS

Activity 1: Create your own color mixing activity starting with the primary colors to make secondary colors and maybe even tertiary colors. You can use food coloring, paint, playdoh, or anything else you have to mix colors. 

Activity 2: Use paint or food dye in water to paint your own color wheel using only primary colors to mix.

3. MONOCHROMATIC (1 color)

Activity 1: Put together a monochromatic outfit.

Activity 2: Make art using monochromatic colors. Choose your subject and your supplies. 

Color can give artwork emotion and feelings. When someone looks at your art or your outfit, what do you want them to feel? For instance Blue could seem sad, Red can seem angry, and Yellow can be happy.

RESOURCE: Artsonia - Turning in Artwork

This is post is specifically for my amazing art students.

When you turn in artwork that you make at home, you will need to upload it to Artsonia. Artsonia is a magical place where you store all the photos of your wonderful artwork. You  may use the free app or the website.

Each week the project theme will include a project title to turn in your artwork. You can also turn in more than one image per project.

I have posted the school's access code on class dojo and on the PDF lessons I give to the teachers. I do not want to post it on a public site because of stranger danger, so if you need the code please email me at ahagen@llschools.net

Once you have the code write it down! Now you can post a whole lot of artworks.
